Mullican Flooring Requests Contributions to NWFA Named Scholarship Fund in Memory of Industry Veteran Don Conner

Donations will help fund scholarship programs
for future generations of wood flooring professionals

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., Aug. 28, 2023 — In memory of James Donald “Don” Conner, Jr., a beloved hardwood flooring industry legend who passed away in October 2022, Mullican Flooring is encouraging individuals to contribute to a National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Education and Research Foundation (ERF) Named Scholarship Fund in his name.

Conner, a 44-year veteran of the wood flooring industry, retired in 2013. He was introduced to the industry at the age of 8, when he began working with his father in the family business, Conner Tile & Floor Covering Company, in his native Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Air Force, which included a tour in Vietnam, and received numerous decorations and citations for his service. After his military career, he attended college and rejoined his father’s business before co-founding his own floor covering company.

After working as vice president of research and development for Harris Tarkett, Conner joined Mullican Flooring as director of product and research, where he also served as director of training and national sales representative.

Conner was heavily involved with the NWFA, where he helped develop technical manuals and guidelines, and served as an instructor at the NWFA/NOFMA/MFMA schools and on the board of directors. He also established the NWFA Certified Professionals (NWFACP) program and earned several NWFA degrees, including Craftsman, Master Craftsman, Advanced Master Craftsman, Vanguard and Ambassador.

Conner retired from his role as NWFA technical director in 2013, one year after receiving the prestigious Industry Leadership Award at the NWFA Wood Flooring Expo, something only 10 other individuals had achieved before him. In addition, he was given honorary lifetime membership and certification upon his retirement.

“Don was extremely passionate about hardwood flooring and teaching other people in the industry,” said Neil Poland, president of Mullican Flooring. “He was a great mentor who taught many people how to install, sell and quote hardwood flooring products. He was the backbone of the NWFA. He received many awards and honors throughout his career for his contributions to our industry and the education of many wood flooring professionals who continue to work in the industry today.”

Donations to the NWFA Education and Research Foundation in Conner’s honor will be used to fund scholarship programs for future generations of wood flooring professionals. A total contribution of $20,000 will meet the eligibility requirements for the NWFA’s Named Scholarship, which permanently honors an individual who made significant and lasting contributions to the industry. Donations honoring Conner are currently slightly past the halfway point for the Named Scholarship and may be sent to the National Wood Flooring Association, 111 Chesterfield Industrial Blvd., Chesterfield, Missouri, 63005, or submitted online.

“Don genuinely cared for people and was one of the kindest, most knowledgeable members of our industry,” Poland added. “I’m proud to have had him as a lifelong friend. His family was very important to him, and he loved to talk about his grandchildren and how his wife, Melissa, kept him out of trouble. I will always remember him as a great husband, father, grandfather and friend.”

The NWFA offers hands-on and online learning for wood flooring professionals. Visit https://nwfa.org/education/ for more information about the training program. The NWFA Education & Research Center Scholarship program provides financial assistance for NWFA training events.

Mullican Flooring Helps Provide New Specially Adapted Home for Wounded Military Veteran and Police Officer

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., June 19, 2023 — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, provided flooring for a new specially adapted smart home for a severely wounded military veteran and former police officer through the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E Program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment).

The Gary Sinise Foundation serves U.S. defenders, veterans, first responders and others through multiple programs. The R.I.S.E. program provides specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes for the nation’s most severely wounded heroes, as well as home modifications, mobility devices, and adapted vehicles for injured, wounded, ill and/or aging heroes.

A 3,000-square-foot, fully wheelchair accessible home that included Mullican flooring was recently dedicated for Marine Corps Corporal (Ret.) and Police Officer (Ret.) Sharif Muzayen in St. Mary’s, Georgia.

Muzayen’s five years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps included two deployments to Afghanistan. He served in several roles, including Non-Commission Officer in Charge in the Cross Unit Combat Operations Center as the liaison between American Armed Forces and the Afghan Units. Following his honorable discharge in 2013, he began pre-academy training at the Orange Police Department (Orange County, California), specializing in identifying and arresting DUI drivers.

In December 2016, while responding to a call about a possible drunk driver, Muzayen was struck and severely injured by another drunk driver. His injuries included a broken tibia/fibula, severed femoral artery and brain hemorrhage. Following a long recovery that included two years of physical therapy and multiple surgeries, his left leg was amputated above the knee in December 2019. He retired from the police department after five years of service. Since his retirement, Muzayen and his family moved to Georgia, where he has been working toward a degree in firearms technology.

“It is a tremendous honor to contribute to this home for Officer Muzayen and partner with the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E Program,” says Neil Poland, president of Mullican Flooring. “In addition to serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps both here and abroad, Officer Muzayen served and protected the citizens of Orange County, California, at immense cost to himself.

“We are exceedingly indebted to him for his dedication to serving others and the sacrifices he has made, and greatly appreciate the inspiration he provides to us all. We sincerely hope this specially adapted home will make daily life easier for him and his family, and that they will receive much enjoyment from it for many years to come.”

This was the 82nd home built and dedicated by the Gary Sinise Foundation to honor a veteran and/or first responder, and the 68th home for which the NWFA has provided flooring in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation. Mullican Flooring Launches New Low-Gloss Solid Oak Collection

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., May 1, 2023 — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, introduces a new oak collection to its solid flooring line.

The Oak Pointe 2.0 Low Gloss Collection offers a matte finish in four colors: Dark Chocolate, Saddle, Gunstock and Natural. Crafted from Appalachian oak, this new collection mirrors the Oak Pointe 2.0 collection that has provided many customers with the warmth and richness of oak, with its unique color variations, mineral streaks and knots, but without the high-gloss finish.

Each collection is available in 2 1/4- and 3-inch widths and random lengths up to 7 feet, with a smooth finish, beveled edges and square ends. Both collections are protected by an aluminum oxide finish and backed by a 25-year finish warranty.

“Demand for low-level gloss finishes for hardwood flooring has seen a strong upward swing in the U.S. over the past few years, and Mullican is excited to offer this finish in our Oak Pointe 2.0 Low Gloss Collection,” says Pat Oakley, vice president of sales and marketing for Mullican. “This collection offers a more simplistic look than high-gloss provides, and shows off the flooring’s natural oak beauty, color variations and grain patterns.

“The low-gloss finish also makes it easier to hide scratches and dents, which makes it a great choice for homeowners with young children and pets. Because dust and dirt don’t show as readily on matte finishes, it’s easier to care for and maintain. It also fits in beautifully with all design styles, from traditional to modern to rustic, and goes well with our most popular colors — light, natural shades and darker wood tones.”

Earlier this year, Mullican introduced its Nordic Naturals collection, a new Scandinavian-inspired line of solid hardwood flooring featuring the most up-to-date hardwood finish technology with antimicrobial protection and high abrasion resistance. This premium collection offers muted natural tones and subtle organic variations, providing a neutral, minimalist look. Nordic Naturals uses high-quality red oak combined with a technology that removes the pink tones, giving consumers the clean, natural visual of white oak. Sustainably harvested and crafted in the Appalachian Mountains, the collection is available in eight colors, three widths and random lengths up to seven feet.

Mullican Flooring Expands High-Performing White Oak Engineered Collection

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., April 26, 2023 — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, announces the addition of two new series and new colors to its Castillian engineered white oak hardwood collection.

The new Elegance series features an AB Grade that provides pristine visuals. Elegance offers two colors in a muted palette — Natural and Cascade. This 5/8-inch-thick flooring provides the same wire-brushed face treatment and beveled edges and ends found in all Castillian products, and is available in a 7 1/2-inch width and random lengths up to 6 feet.

The new Premier Herringbone series offers added visual interest and detail that provide an elegant aesthetic. Each plank is 24.61 inches by 4.92 inches and has an NWFA Certified Refinishable wear layer. The series is offered in two colors, Coastal Fog and Monroe Bisque, which coordinate with planks in the Premier series.

Additional colors for the existing Castillian series include Waverly and Sandridge in the Estate series, and Boardwalk and Cayman in the Premier series. Both series offer wide widths and random lengths up to 86.61 inches. All Castillian products are NWFA Certified Refinishable and carry a 50-year finish warranty.

“Mullican is excited to offer the new Elegance series in our Castillian engineered hardwood collection, which has long been one of our most popular collections,” says Pat Oakley, vice president of sales and marketing for Mullican. “Castillian is precision manufactured from the finest European white oak, which provides a solid hardwood visual combined with the added stability of engineered construction.

“The Elegance series introduces a more subdued, fresh look to Castillian that is trending with consumers. The new Premier Herringbone series offers stunning new design options, whether used alone or in combination with our Premier planks, and the new Castillian colors feature popular tones for a contemporary look.”

Mullican Flooring Launches New Nordic Naturals Collection

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., Feb. 24, 2023 — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, announces the addition of Nordic Naturals oak flooring, a new Scandinavian-inspired line of solid hardwood flooring. The collection features the most up-to-date hardwood finish technology with antimicrobial protection and high abrasion resistance.

The ¾-inch-thick collection offers muted natural tones and subtle organic variations. It is available in 3-, 4- and 5-inch widths, with random lengths up to 7 feet. Sustainably harvested and crafted in the Appalachian Mountains, the premium designer line is available in eight colors: Aurora, Copenhagen, Glacier Falls, Glistening Ice, Northern Lights, Norwegian Oak, Stockholm and Summit.

“The Nordic Naturals collection provides a neutral, minimalist look that is in high demand with consumers,” says Pat Oakley, vice president of sales and marketing for Mullican. “This beautiful addition to Mullican’s solid hardwood products uses high-quality red oak combined with a technology that removes the pink tones, giving consumers the clean, natural visual of white oak, but at a lower price point. The natural tones look great no matter the lighting conditions of a room, and changes in natural lighting bring out new shades and textures in the flooring.

“As a leader in domestic hardwood flooring, Mullican is proud to reaffirm our commitment to innovation with the introduction of our Nordic Naturals collection,” Oakley says. “Our manufacturing process highlights the natural features of the highest-quality Appalachian hardwoods we use for our flooring, which produce beautiful, consistent grain patterns that enhance color and durability. Our precise finishes are tailored to enhance and reveal natural features in the wood.

“This new collection will serve as a launching point for additional product development for our company, as we continue to strive to reach new aesthetic heights, create the most durable products and develop best practices for environmental care.”

NWFA Releases New EPD for Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., Feb. 16, 2022 — The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has released two Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) conducted by an independent third party to assess the cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of solid and engineered wood flooring products. Mullican Flooring was one of fourteen companies to partner with the NWFA to determine the lifetime environmental impacts of hardwood flooring, from manufacturing to disposal.

EPDs measure a wide range of environmental impacts the product might have, including the total global warming potential, the ozone depletion potential, and the consumption of freshwater resources. These measurements help architects and builders select environmentally friendly materials to meet green building standards. The two new EPDs also offer Mullican Flooring the opportunity to demonstrate the superior sustainability of hardwood flooring as compared to other short-lived flooring products.

The total carbon emissions of one square meter of solid hardwood flooring over a 75-year lifespan was found to be somewhere between 9.16 kg and 26.33 kg CO2. For comparison, rigid-core Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) emits a minimum of 64.27 kg CO2 over its lifetime.

When compared to other popular flooring choices such as tile, vinyl, and rubber flooring, solid and engineered hardwood have the lowest carbon emissions. Hardwood is the clear environmental choice.

dha_global_warming_potential.png
With a range of refinishable solid and engineered flooring, Mullican offers a wide variety of flooring that, with the right care and maintenance, may last well beyond the 75-year lifespan estimate used in the study. Mullican also continues to support the growth of our domestic forests to create a natural carbon sink. In the Appalachian Mountains where Mullican sources its lumber, there are 2.45 new trees growing for every one that dies or is harvested.

This new EPD solidifies Mullican Flooring’s position in the market as a sustainable manufacturer whose products and process have a remarkably low carbon footprint.

Mullican Flooring Helps Provide New Specially Adapted Home for Severely Wounded Army Veteran

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., May 14, 2022 — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, has provided flooring for a new smart home for a wounded military veteran through the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment).

The Gary Sinise Foundation serves U.S. defenders, veterans, first responders and others through multiple programs, including R.I.S.E. The program provides specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes for the nation’s most severely wounded heroes, as well as home modifications, mobility devices and adapted vehicles to injured, wounded, ill and/or aging heroes.

A home that included Mullican flooring was recently dedicated for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant (Ret.) Jason Tabansky in San Antonio, Texas. Sgt. Tabansky enlisted in the Army in December 2000 as a Chinook helicopter mechanic. When 9/11 occurred just weeks after he entered basic training, he volunteered to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and served two tours in Afghanistan. He served a third tour of duty in Taji, Iraq, for a year in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In September 2015, Sgt. Tabansky fell from a ladder following a routine demonstration of a new Chinook helicopter and became paralyzed from the chest down. While recovering at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, he was inspired by other severely wounded soldiers there who refused to allow their conditions to hinder them. Through intense physical therapy, he regained control of his hands, but remains a paraplegic. Since his injury, he has become an avid hunter, fisherman, competitive archer and bass player for his church. He also spends time coaching and working with children, and hopes to earn a degree in education and start a family with his wife, Courtney.

“It is a privilege to participate in a cause as worthy as the R.I.S.E. program, and we are honored to provide beautiful wood flooring for Sgt. Tabansky’s new home,” says Neil Poland, president of Mullican Flooring. “We are tremendously grateful for his service to our country, and commend him for his desire to help others and the inspiration he provides to us all. It is our hope that this specially adapted home will make daily life much easier for him and his wife, and that they will receive much enjoyment from it for many years to come.”

One of the nation’s top five hardwood flooring producers, Mullican Flooring operates additional production facilities in Norton, Virginia; Holland, New York; and Ronceverte, West Virginia. The company manufactures and sells more than 1,500 products via a network of 40 distributors and 5,000 retail stores across the United States and Canada. NWFA Completes 41st Home with Gary Sinise Foundation

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (November 21, 2019) – The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has provided flooring for its 41st home in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment).  The R.I.S.E. program builds custom, specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders.  The home dedication for United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Jesse Cottle took place on November 11, in Eagle, Idaho.  Flooring for the project was donated by NWFA member Mullican Flooring.

SSgt. Cottle was injured in 2009 while serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan during his fourth deployment.  He and his Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were on foot patrol clearing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) when one detonated under him, resulting in the loss of both legs.

“SSgt. Mullican Flooring Introduces Wexford Kiln-Aged, Expands Engineered Product Line

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Mullican Flooring, a leading manufacturer of quality hardwood floors, announced today the release of Wexford Kiln-Aged, a new carbonized collection within its engineered wood flooring line. The new collection uses a heat-treating technique to produce a unique color variation and uncover the natural grain patterns of the wood.

Carbonization naturally retains the structural value of the wood with a multi-step approach, while creating a rich and natural look that is unmatched. Offering five upscale products, the addition of Wexford Kiln-Aged will distinguish Mullican Flooring from its competitors within the market.

“We are proud to introduce our carbonized collection and prouder still to reaffirm our commitment to product innovation,” said Pat Oakley, Vice President of Marketing for the Johnson City, Tennessee-based company. “Mullican Flooring has already proven to be a leader in domestic manufacturing, and it is our goal to use the announcement of Wexford Kiln-Aged as a catalyst for more product development in the United States.”

European inspired and available in white oak and hickory, Wexford Kiln-Aged will share many of the same qualities that Mullican’s existing Wexford and Nature sawn collections possess.

Mullican Flooring will also add four new colors to its Mount Castle collection this year—available in both herringbone and wide-plank options. The herringbone products will be sold in 3.5- and 5-inch widths, and the wide-plank products will be offered in 7.44- and 9.45-inch widths. Available in white oak and walnut, Mount Castle is known for its hand-sculpted, wire-brushed and whitewash finishes within the engineered flooring line.

Mullican Flooring operates additional production facilities in Norton, Virginia; Holland, New York; and Ronceverte, West Virginia.
