The Health Benefits of Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is a healthy choice for you and the environment.  Just as we are committed to sustainable practices that promote healthy forests and long-term enjoyment of the beautiful Appalachian mountains, we are also committed to crafting premium flooring held to the highest standards for the health of your home.  We want you to be able to live a long and healthy life on the beautiful, natural foundation of real hardwood.

Hardwood flooring is a natural material with a variety of health benefits.  Unlike carpet, hardwood flooring does not trap dust, pet dander, and other allergens which can cause discomfort in your home.  Our aluminum oxide finishes make our floors moisture resistant so that any spills or messes can be easily cleaned.  Unlike some uncertified flooring alternatives, our hardwood flooring does not contain any toxic chemicals that might be harmful to children or small pets

Both our solid and engineered products are FloorScore certified, which is the most recognized indoor air quality certification standard for hard surface flooring materials.  Our products are also California Air Resource Board (CARB) compliant, which guarantees that we are an ultra-low-emitting formaldehyde resin (ULEF) manufacturer of composite wood products.  Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring byproduct of heating wood at very high temperatures, and the CARB standard ensures that the flooring is well within the safe range of formaldehyde emissions.

We trust Mullican Flooring with our homes and families, and we work and live on the beautiful foundation of Mullican’s hardwood floors.  Breathe easy knowing that we hold ourselves to the highest standards so that your family will stay safe and healthy while enjoying a beautiful, natural product that will last a lifetime.

Sustainability

What is sustainability?  For manufacturers like us, the basic idea is to create a product in a way that honors natural resources and preserves our environment from years to come.  This applies not only to the manufacturing process, but also to where the raw materials come from and what happens to the product once it is released into the world.

Mullican Flooring is committed to protecting the natural, renewable resources of our forests and preserving the Appalachian ecosystem for future generations.  We carefully select lumber that is sourced using responsible forestry practices.  For every tree that is harvested or dies, at least two more trees are growing in its place.

Our manufacturing process uses every piece of the tree so that no wood goes to waste: tree bark is processed into mulch, wood chips are used for heating fuel, sawdust becomes particle board, and wood blocks are made into charcoal.

Once our premium hardwood floors leave the factory, they provide a long-lasting, beautiful foundation for your space.  Our finish warranties last from 25 years to a lifetime, and hardwood flooring can be refinished to extend its lifespan far beyond the original finish.  If hardwood flooring ever needs to be removed from a home, it is a natural material that will biodegrade with time—it won’t end up sitting forever in a landfill.

Hardwood floors are a good, sustainable investment for you and for the environment.  Hardwood is a natural material that is good for your health and for the health of the environment.

Responsible Forestry

At Mullican, we work with national, state-level, and local organizations to develop best management practices for each unique part of the forest.  Individual ecosystems and plant species need specific conditions to grow and replenish the forest, and different parts of the forest may require soil conservation, water conservation, wildlife conservation, or other environmental care.

We ensure that no lumber is taken from conservation or old-growth forests and that forest growth exceeds the rate of harvesting and natural tree death.  For every tree that is harvested from the Appalachian Mountains to produce Mullican flooring, there are more than two new hardwood trees growing for each tree that is harvested or dies.

Responsible forestry isn’t just about protecting forests—it’s also about protecting forest workers and residents.  Our hardwood floors are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, guaranteeing that all timber was harvested in a way that makes forest workers and local communities better off, both economically and socially.  The FSC certification also communicates that all indigenous land rights were respected, that the ecological integrity of the forest is maintained, and that all forests with environmental or social significance are left untouched.

Our home is in the Appalachian Mountains, and we want to support our communities and protect the natural beauty of our forests for years to come.

Our Appalachian Home

Did you know that the Appalachian Mountains are some of the oldest mountains on the earth?  The region is one of the most biodiverse in North America, with a variety of microclimates that have developed within the peaks and valleys.  For those of us who live here, the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains is unmatched and irreplaceable.

Our Mullican Flooring plants are located across the Appalachian region, from Johnson City, TN, to Norton, VA, to Ronceverte, WV, and Holland, NY.  Not only do we live and work here in the beauty of the Appalachian region, we also source our lumber from small-town sawmills across the area to support local economies.

We are committed to protecting the unique natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, both now and for future generations.  This involves supporting sustainable forestry—there are over two new trees growing for every one that dies or is harvested in Appalachian forests—and creating jobs across the region so that people can continue to live near and enjoy the mountains.

Even if you aren’t able to visit the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or Shenandoah National Park, you can take home the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains through our sustainably sourced, premium hardwood flooring.  Help us preserve and support our home for years to come.
